Welsh golfers up for the Challenge

Welsh golf fans are in for a treat next month when the SWALEC Wales Challenge returns to the Vale Hotel, Golf and Spa Resort (23rd – 26th July) with a line up of professional golfers all hoping to emulate their European Tour heroes.
The event, with a prize fund of 150,000 euros, will see golfers from more than twenty countries compete in an event which has, in the past, attracted the likes of Stephen Dodd and Phil Price.
Past winners include Wales' own Craig Williams and Sion Bebb and Graeme Storm who has gone on to make an impact on the main tour. Welsh players expected to challenge last year's winner, Ireland's Michael McGeady, include Mark Laskey, Tim Dykes, Craig Smith, Matthew Griffiths, Trevor Jones as well as Rhys Davies, Wales' only entry into the British Open who last year equalled the course record on day 2 with a finish of 69, two under par.
Rob Holt, Chief Executive of Ryder Cup Wales, said: “We are delighted that SWALEC have maintained their support not only for this event but also for grassroots golf across Wales. This year's tournament will again attract some of the very best up and coming golfers and we look forward to welcoming players back in July for what will be the fourth year at the venue.
“This event provides a fantastic opportunity for spectators to watch golf on their doorstep free of charge and I would urge golf fans, of all ages and standards, to come and show their support for local players.”
The event partnership between Ryder Cup Wales and SWALEC is part of a three year agreement which also includes a golf development grassroots programme.
Alan Williams, Director of Energy Sales for SWALEC commented: “Our partnership with Ryder Cup Wales highlights our commitment to golf development in Wales which sees at one end of the scale golf promoted at grass roots level – with the recent launch of our golf rules and etiquette DVD, in conjunction with Golf Development Wales, and our support of the SWALEC Junior Challenge - through to supporting first-class events like the SWALEC Wales Challenge.
“The Challenge Tour acts as a breeding ground for world golf champions of the future and to have one of its events here is Wales is a fantastic opportunity for SWALEC to play a part in helping to develop and recognise young talent.”
The four day event will be staged on the Wales National course, one of the longest courses in Europe, and is the perfect event for professionals aiming to make their mark on The European Tour.
